History of Crimea Federal University :
- In year 1918, the Taurida Vernadsky University was established in the capital of Crimea i.e. Simferopol & just had 5 departments viz. Medicine, Agronomy, Physics & Mathematics, History & Philosophy and Law.
- In year 1920, academician V. I. Vernadsky was chosen as the rector of university.
- In year 1921, the university was renamed to M.V. Frunze Crimean University and till year year 1930, the university had became quite popular for courses in medicine, pedagogy & agricultural courses.
- In year 1972, the university was renamed to M.V. Frunze Simferopol State University.
- In year 2017, an order was passed by the president of Russia i.e. Dmitry Medvedov for creation of a federal university & this university served as the base for creation of today’s V. I. Vernadsky Crimea Federal University.
History of Simferopol :
The city got the name Simferopol in year 1784 when it was annexed in the Russian empire by Catherine II of Russia. The name of city means “City of Usefulness”. Simferopol became the administrative center of then Taurida region in year 1802 and in the mid of 1850’s several army reserves & a hospital was established in the city. During the Crimean war in this period around 30,000 Russian soldiers were buried in Simferopol itself. After the end of Russian Civil War, the city was captured by the Red Army in 1920 and became the capital of the autonomous state of Crimean Soviet Socialist republic. After the division of Soviet Union in 1991, the city became the capital of Autonomous Republic of Crimea. The majority of population in city was of Russians and some other minorities like Tatars & Ukrainians. In year 2014 a referendum was held which showed that majority of Crimean people wanted it to be annexed with Russia instead of Ukraine & hence became part of Russian Federation since 2014.
